St Paul’s Reception & Year 1 Play Area

Play Area, Cambridge

The Brief

This area was originally two separate play areas for each year group. One of the key things bought up by the PTA was the need to open it up in to an area that both year groups could share.

The PTA and school worked really hard on this, creating a strong brief to guide the design process. The result shows that it all paid off!

The Result

This play area consists of: a combined outdoor classroom and performance stage, a barked woodland scene with logs to sit and balance on, soft play surfacing for running around and riding trikes, a sheltered play hut, and an adventurous play area consisting of a low level tree house with balance beam and rope, climbing tunnel, monkey bars, and edging logs to retain the bark, which are also great for balancing. In addition we built a large lockable storage area.

Our aim of bringing the woodland theme to schools was achieved more than ever on this project, with it being in such a central city location. We feel that the “wobbly” fencing and gates we built also really helped to soften the area.
