Education & Teaching

Education & Teaching

Education is a huge part of who we are. We love to tell the story of the coppice (1 tree magically becoming 10!) and to show the biodiversity it creates. We love to demystify the process of building with local wood, to excite the next generation as they take over stewardship of the world.

We often talk in assemblies at schools we have worked at, talking about coppices, how they work and why they are so important. In these assemblies we use photographs in Powerpoint presentations and show the children some of the tools we use in the woods…. depending on the time of year, we sometimes bring a tub of sweet chestnuts too!

Some schools like to work our presence on site in to their curriculum, sending out little journalists to find out more about what we do!

Student Participation

Student participation is something that we have been more than happy to work with. We work closely with the Cavendish Schools (a group of schools working with neurodiverse and cognitively able children and young people), creating play and education spaces for all to benefit from. Students at Gretton school were invited to peel bark off the sweet chestnut trees we were to use at their school in a special trip to the coppice and helped dig the holes we put the posts in. They also designed and cut Perspex colourful windows in their D.T. classes, which we built frames for in the tree house.

The Wonder Of Wood Event

In collaboration with Burwash Manor and WonderWood & Foxcotte, we created Cambridge’s first annual wood fair. Born out of our collective love for craftsmanship and the outdoors, we wanted to produce an event that was enjoyable and educational.

During the 2-day event, we focus on getting adults and children involved and teaching them about various aspects of the outdoors including live demonstrations and hands on activities. Children get the chance to learn important survival skills, go pond dipping, discover the magical fenland wildlife, take part in den building and listen to captivating stories from our storyteller.
