Langley Lodge, The Norman School, Northwold

This structure is both an outdoor classroom for the pupils of ‘The Norman School’ Northwold primary school in Norfolk, and a stage for summer events and May day for the whole village to use. The front two panels are removable for the full stage effect.

All of the uprights, braces and tie beams are sections of Sweet Chestnut trees we coppiced ourselves. The Willow was coppiced in Granchester and the structural timber and flooring is all pressure treated from a timber merchants. We used Canadian Western Red Cedar roof tiles, and built the benches with some Sweet Chestnut that we had planked locally from a large tree felled in Norfolk.

The size of this structure made it a real challenge to build. We went for a slightly different roof structure design this time and it was the first time that we have cladded the entire back wall with Willow (apart from the escape tunnel exit!). We are really happy with the structure and know that it will be put to very good use.
