Recently we were asked to create an outdoor toilet for a campsite deep in the heart of Suffolk woodland, the one rule being we build it in Artisan Structures style. Immediately we were on board, excited by the task of turning something that’s usually unsightly into something beautiful.
The Design
The structure is comprised of larch planks and fascia boards, a sweet chestnut handrail, cedar shingles and a timber frame which has been secured in place with cement. The composting toilet is fully functional with separate containers for solids and liquids and has been built in a ‘batch’ design (meaning it relies on gravity, not water, so no flushing) to be as environmentally friendly as possible.
The Result
We couldn’t be happier with how it has turned out! We feel that we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to do with this project, which was to not only make an outdoor toilet beautiful but for the structure to complement its environment and feel like it belongs there. We used some truly stunning wood for this build, the larch planks on the front are a particular favourite of ours, especially when accompanied by the sweet chestnut handrail.
