This outdoor classroom has been built with local materials. Douglass fir rafters from trees felled in Suffolk, sweet chestnut posts from a coppice in Essex and willow from a coppice in Cambridgeshire.
The octagonal classroom was a lovely project to design and build with the client, with complex carpentry details and a strong feeling of being built out of woodland coppices. The oak ‘boss’ that the rafters lean on has a lovely owl carved in to it by Tim Atkins. The local birds were very aware of his presence!
